John Steinbeck's Cannery Row

Published in 1945, John Steinbeck's famed book, Cannery Row, highlighted cannery life and its hardships during the height of the Great Depression. With colorful characters and an approachable writing style, the book sets readers in the very center of life in the heart of Monterey's canning community. Inspired by the book, the city renamed the street from Ocean View Avenue to Cannery Row in 1958 and many local landmarks help bring the story to life during your visit.
