Monterey Bay Aquarium

Exhibits & Sea Life

From cuddly sea otters and amusing penguins to a remarkable kelp forest and an impressive Outer Bay tank, the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers exhibits to fascinate and inspire visitors of all ages. The aquarium features an array of live ocean animals, birds and fish, including sharks, rays, sea turtles, sunfish, sea stars, jellyfish, tuna, and more.

The Monterey Aquarium’s newest exhibit opens on April 12, 2014 with an exciting array of intriguing cephalopods on display. See a dozen exhibits featuring live octopuses, squid and cuttlefish large and small, while you discover more about their life cycles, habitats and unique talents.

  • What are the best times to come?

    The fall and winter months are the least crowded. If you do visit on holidays or in the summer, plan to come between 2pm-6pm or on less busy days like Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
  • Are there any insider tips for visiting the aquarium?

    Avoid long lines at the ticket window by ordering your tickets online. Once inside, plan to check the feeding and film times so you can plan your visit accordingly. Take the little ones to the touch pools and Splash Zone early to avoid the crowds. Pack your lunch to save cash and enjoy a meal on the outdoor patio overlooking the Bay.

New special exhibition at Monterey Bay Aquarium opens March 19, 2016, features unusual animals from land and sea, compelling conservation stories

From sun-soaked deserts to vibrant tropical reefs, Baja California is a unique and fragile place whose future hangs in a delicate balance. The Monterey Bay Aquarium's next special exhibition, ¡Viva Baja! Life on the Edge, explores this beautiful and rugged region, its diverse habitats and amazing animals. Five galleries explore Baja's arid deserts, lush coastal mangrove forests and colorful coral reefs. Visitors will meet fascinating marine creatures: stingrays and eels, seahorses and crabs, a rainbow of tropical fishes, including the sunset wrasse, Mexican lookdown, bluespottedjawfish and balloonfish, plus several iconic desert animals-a first for the Aquarium. Along the way, visitors will discover how much we all are connected to Baja California, and why it's vital to preserve this special place.
